Pier Francesco Mola:
The Drawings

Curator Dr. Sonja Brink.

The exhibition takes visitors to the sensually charged Rome of the High Baroque. Pier Francesco Mola, working as a painter of frescoes and panel paintings for the powerful prince-bishops and patrons of the seventeenth century, develops his virtuosity to its fullest in his drawings.

We see fiery mixed media works combining pastel, pen and brush washes and which, together with the coloured paper ground, surge into a tumultuous overall effect. Mola´s drawings fascinate because they convey to the beholder a real sense of the artist´s creative process and show him in the process of his quest for a certain figure or composition.

In the forty or so drawings by Pier Francesco Mola it houses, the Collection at Düsseldorf possesses the largest known coherent cycle of work by this significant artist of the Baroque. For all but a few of the drawings, this is the first time ever that they have been put on public show.
