Galerie 10 presents the summer exhibition by Utrecht based artist Michiel ten Bokum. Both the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, and Galerie 10’s last show at the current premises, Gorgeous, Sexy, Beautiful will give a an overview of ten Bokum’s recent paintings and sculptures. A true leitmotif in the work of Utrecht based artist Michiel ten Bokum is his never ceasing anthropologic interest in the social structures of the local community. In a gritty mix of fine art and twisted pop culture, his work reflects an obvious love for underdogs and outsiders. Subjective observations of violence, individual insanity and all forms of abjectness, are molded into paintings and objects in a most vulgar and politically incorrect way. The severely obese women and self-portraits in Gorgeous, Sexy, Beautiful can be seen as grotesque parade where imperfections are a shield in the game of hide and seek. Michiel ten Bokum (1973) studied fine arts in Den Bosch and at De Ateliers. He works primarily in the field of painting, drawing and sculpture. After long term series with subjects as Punks Don’t Paint, Famous Dead Alcoholics, Portraits of Inferior Dictators, homosexual KKK-members, ten Bokum keeps a close affinity with the celebration of outcasts and the underground. The overall thematic of his work is propelled by personal obsessions, while irony, self-mockery and bottled-up anger serve as the fundamental tools in shaping his ideas. His work recently featured in exhibitions at Re:Rotterdam, Direktorenhaus Berlin and De Fabriek Eindhoven.
