A new series of paintings derived from a postmodern landscape, but it's plates are shifting. Bert Frings paints abstract landscapes in turbulent colours that seduce the eye in order to question our perception. At first sight the colours carry us away, but the composition disrupts immediate communication. The spatial formation goes awry and rubs one the wrong way. The paintings suggests space, but at the same time that space remains inaccessible. At that point the gaze is thrown back upon the substantial qualities of the canvas itself: the organic barricades, the curling guts, the geometrical surroundings, are in reality lanes of paint that Bert created by chasing the paint with a compressor. The way the shapes are applied to the canvas also refer to the slick aggressiveness of a digital fantasy world. The landscapes and fantastical colours seem to come right out of the universe of a computer game or from the set of a spectacular science fiction film. Bert’s canvases offer a panoramic view of a post-nuclear world as seen through a porthole covered in alga. It is a world between dream and venomousness.
