Philosophically driven the work of Karamanolis is the result of a thorough articulation of thoughts, including and transforming an unbroken stream of influences from remote antiquity to contemporary life. In his drawings Karamanolis' subjects take the form of the living and the non-living, such as figures, trees, a Capricorn, columns or houses. Also the influence of 1960's comic books is visible through the quick change in tone, from saturated colours and bright palette, facilitating a vigorous tempo to the work.

Karamanolis works are to be understood beyond the ontological senses, covered in symbols and anthropological references.

For the artist the ambiguity of what these ‘things' are and symbolize is a continuous occupation and concern, hence the aspect of a metaphysical abstraction.

In some of the stylised subjects we can recognize the symbolism gestures from hieroglyphs, known for containing and sustaining a form of narrative. Karamanolis eagerly reverts to the Eastern Mediterranean vocabulary of mythological motifs as well as incorporating ancient circular elements and geometric shapes.

We are very proud that Stelios Karamanolis is in the running for the SOLO Prize at the Art Brussels contemporary art fair.

Stelios Karamanolis is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Art. Recent exhibition were held at The Breeder, Athens; Self-Hypnosis, with Panos Papadopoulos, Kunstbüro, Vienna; Kunstraum am Schauplatz, Vienna; Lepsien Art Foundation, Dusseldorf; Lustlands Vol.II on The Great Eastern (after Andreas Embiricos), curated by Nadja Argyropoulou and Lakis & Aris Ionas – The Callas, Thermisia Argolidas Peloponnese; Hope – Kibu, 練馬区立美術館 Nerima art museum, Tokyo, Japan.
