Over de kunstenaar Geboren in Gent. Woont en werkt in Gent.
Oorlog en conflict vormen haar grootste bron van inspiratie: de Grote Oorlog van 1914-1918 aan de IJzer, de recente conflicten in het voormalige Joegoslavië. Opmerkelijk: in al haar figuren zijn de ogen afwezig. Dit detail maakt de beklemming en de eenzaamheid van haar verbeeldingswereld extra schrijnend. Toch zijn de beelden op zich niet wreed of choquerend. De beeldentaal is niet extreem. Haar werk haalt zijn kracht uit een bezonkenheid in zichzelf, en uit het contrast tussen de pijnlijke aanwezigheid van het lichaam en de afwezigheid van de geest.
Het sterk en authentiek oeuvre van Berlinde De Bruyckere heeft zich een unieke plaats in de kunstwereld veroverd. In 2005 leverde ze een bijdrage aan het centrale paviljoen van de Biënnale van Venetië en had ze een eenmanstentoonstelling in Tilburg. De afgelopen twee jaar stelde ze tentoon in half West-Europa. Het internationale succes heeft een prijs. Haar werk was de jongste jaren meer in het buitenland dan hier te zien. De jury hoopt dat daar binnenkort verandering in komt. De tijd is rijp voor een overzichtstentoonstelling, waarin ook plaats is voor De Bruyckeres prachtige voorbereidende tekeningen en aquarellen.
