Zbigniew Kosc  (1951)

Over de kunstenaar
Born in Poland. He is interested in classical cultures, anthropology and architecture. He is especially known for his photographs of Athos, the monastic community in Greece (see ATHOS, U.Bär Verlag, Zurich, Switzerland, 1988). He has also photographed the ancient ruins of Egypt, Kurdistan and the architecture of such world cities as Florence, Rome, New York, London and St. Petersburg. Zbigniew Kosc received a Ph.D. in social psychology but later studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where he has been based since 1980. His photographs have been published world-wide and frequently exhibited in such places as Canon Image Centre Amsterdam, Architectural Association of London, and Wereldmuseum Rotterdam.

Hij poogt de religieuze sfeer op te roepen, die alles, van de donkere gewelfde gebouwen tot en met het dorre, rotsachtige landschap, doordringt. De beelden laten zowel wat zien van de naar binnen gekeerde religie, van de afgeslotenheid van de monniken-republiek waar nog steeds strenge toegangsbepalingen gehanteerd worden, als van de beschreven, maar onwillekeurig ook zichtbare achteruitgang door ontvolking van de kloosters en vergrijzing van hun bewoners. De druk, duotone, in vrij zware tinten, passend bij de opgeroepen religieuze sfeer, is uitstekend, het boek is mede daardoor tot een van de meest interessante boeken over Athos die verschenen zijn.

Most of all, I liked his photographs. He preferred to photograph interiors, without people, only a few simple objects - a flower in a glass, flaking paint on a door frame, or a frayed rug. Het signatuur van zijn als met een penseel bewerkte fotografie doet onmiddelijk denken aan de schilderkunst zelf. Het is niet het geblindeerde oog van de camera die de toon zet maar het eigen innerlijke oog van de fotograaf zelf die, om z'n eigen identiteit en plaatsbepaling in de wereld scherp te stellen, de scheppingsdaad in concreto en tot in de abstractie uitvoert. Deze eigenzinnige werkwijze resulteert in verrassende poëtische sferen; het realisme wordt opgelost in haar eigen paradox van het denkbeeldige.

Zijn werk heeft een poëtische inslag. Hij neemt de tijd om zorgvuldig de sfeer van de omgeving op zich te laten inwerken. Hij verbeeldt de grandeur van de monumentale architectuur in, wat hij vermoedt, het laatste stadium van hun bestaan. Kosc schetst een panorama van een absurde, nieuwe wereld op de resten van een eeuwenoud verleden.

The Russian work of Zbigniew Kosc, rides the wonderfully thin line between humour and tragedy. From a warm portrait of a babuschka trying to sell her only rooster at the market in St. Petersburg (the rooster is perched atop an empty crate of Nefertiti (!) oranges) to a Bashkir teacher and her school choir waiting half-hopefully on a windy and desolate plain for the arrival of the Russian president, Kosc’s photographs are powerful documents of the places and people he sees, at the time he sees them.
