Berlin, considered an international centre for sound art, provided the venue for the first Sonambiente festival in 1996. Drawing on that highly successful festival organised by the Akademie der Künste as part of its third centenary celebrations, Sonambiente 2006 aims to lend expression to today’s sound art, which now encompasses an even wider range of artistic media, in the context of Berlin's evolving cultural landscape. Under the joint auspices of the Akademie der Künste and the Berliner Festspiele, Sonambiente 2006 is the most recent production of a partnership that first caused a sensation in 1980 with the groundbreaking interdisciplinary exhibition 'Für Augen und Ohren' (for eyes and ears), curated by René Block and Nele Hertling.
