Wednesday June 15 almost all fairs have started or have their previews, VIP parties and press viewings. But Basel starts early this year. Design Miami/Basel (Hall 5 of the Messe) starts on Monday with a Vernissage from 6-9pm. This event is a VIP cards only access and the ART BASEL organization has limited the distribution of the VIP cards tremendously, which is a good thing I think personally. The VOLTA SHOW (Helsinki Strasse 5) also opens today for invited guests and VIPS, but at 2pm the general public is welcome to view the art fair. Liste (Burgweg 15) opens for public on Monday from 5pm till 10pm. After the opening Liste has an opening party from 10pm in NT/Areal (Erlenstrasse 21/23). Sound, vision, people... If the weather permits, the party will take place outside.
Absolutely the best thing about being in Basel early are your chances of getting a table at “Bodega zum Strauss” in the Centre of the city (Barfusserplatz 16). The Bodega is for many the living room of Basel because of owner Johnny and his team. Very close to Bodega is the Kunsthalle (Steinenberg 7) which has food and drinks in different restaurants and bars and every day from 11pm till 3am there will be drinks and dancing at the Campari Bar.
Tuesday June 14:
It’s a beautiful day to visit the exhibition “Constantin Brancusi & Richard Serra” at the Fondation Beyeler (Baselstrasse 101, Riehen) only a short drive from Basel. During ART BASEL the museum will be open every day from 9am till 8pm. This, of course, is the alternative for everyone who does not have “First Choice” entrance for ART BASEL which starts at 11am. I’ll have to visit the museum after.
Wednesday June 15:
I am off to SCOPE Art Show early (Kaserne, Klybeckstrasse 1b). Witzenhausen Gallery has a booth on the art fair with the best work by Annemarie Busschers, Cathalijn Wouters, Hendrik Kerstens, Jowhara AlSaud, Maria Teresa Meloni, Michael Scott and Olphaert den Otter. That makes me very proud to invite you to visit us. We also have some beautiful work by incredible artists around us at our neighboring booths. The Kaserne will be the place to be for the night programme since they have the opening party with live music and dancing.
Thursday June 16:
All the art fairs are open and we will go around with our collectors. Discovering new artists or getting them great works by established artists. For lunch we are off to Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (Blumenrain 8). We enjoy our beautiful lunch at a table in front of the open doors overlooking the river Rhine. From 2pm till midnight there is an Art Parcours organized (www.ar tbasel.com/parcours) with site-specific artworks and performances by internationally renowned artists and emerging talents transform a variety of unique locations throughout the St. Alban neighborhood. All curated by Jens Hoffmann, Director of the Wattis Institute, San Francisco. From 8pm till midnight there is a special evening program even. But don’t worry if you miss it, it goes on all week. Tired of walking I head to Restaurant Fischerstubbe (Rheingasse 45) to have a home brewed beer with the fresh fish dish from the market and another beer.
Friday June 17:
On Wednesday Art Conversations and Salon starts already with some interesting presentations or panel discussions. It’s worthwhile to dig through the program and find the most interesting ones and include those in your program. Friday there is a panel discussion about collector focus “patronage and politics” which my group might find interesting. The rest of the day contains hopefully lunch at Bodega, meeting in the VIP lounges and getting together for an early evening drink at Kunsthalle.
Saturday June 18:
Generally my last day. In our booth at Scope we expect the group who got in on Friday from there we will do our round to the other art fairs. Experience learns that the program changes with the quality of the shows. Somehow I think all the Basel art fairs will be exciting this year, but please don’t kill the messenger and enjoy Sunday.
