These ideas reflect as well on the notion of ‘tactic’ in Michel de Certeau as on the notion of ‘Detournement’ in Guy Debord. For Michel de Certeau to emphasize the everyday can be a way to deal with the abyss of modernity that lies between the homogeinity of abstract universal ideas and the heterogeinity and the coincidental of our daily lives. For Debord the idea of ‘A Detournement’ consists in "turning expressions of the capitalist system against itself”.
The artists in this show all have modernity at the base of their practice. But they do not use it in a linear way, but they rethink modernity on their own terms, use it in their own crooked ways, as if turning it against itself.
