The works of Jolien van Hassel start with the personal and not immediately striking matter in her own close surroundings. By exploring, for example hair, elastic bands and her relations to others in drawings, scans or photography, she creates sensitive images. Paper is the prominent carrier and the works balance between abstraction and figuration. During this research the question arises if these everyday byproducts aren’t a lot more then they seem and if they can show us there hidden beauty and meaning.
