The artist's practice is a performative and interdisciplinary one, across extended multiple media and series, exploring and detourning the art historical tropes of still life, the nude, portraiture and self portraiture. Her renowned Liz Taylor Series can perhaps be seen at this point as a sort of proto-selfie: It uses Pop Art imagery and assemblage to critique representation and the sexual politics of identity and media representation/self-representation. Images of Liz Taylor overlaid with profanities provide a platform in which Burkhart addresses feminist resistance, female dominance and sexual power. Kathe Burkhart has been working on these quasi-autobiographical portraits of Elizabeth Taylor since 1982, all of which are photo based, gleaned from production and publicity stills and candid shots.
Additionally, we are pleased to premiere The XY Portfolio. Drawing as always from life, this body of photographs is both an homage to Robert Mapplethorpe's controversial X Portfolio and Hans Bellmer's work with Unica Zurn. Devoted to an elegant yet explicit representations of genderqueer sexuality as lived life, the photos depict one of the artist's play partners, a transwoman whose fetishes include bondage, autogynephilia, and the desire to be transformed into a perfect living doll. She has appeared as a muse in Kathe's drawings as well.
