The title of the exhibition, Hearsay, refers to the tension Hendriks tries to find in his paintings. Primitive communication methods such as smoke signals are prone to false interpretations and confusion. However, the contemporary information sources currently at our disposal might have become equally unreliable. Hendriks’ way of working leaves the spectator to doubt the reliability of our own glance. Our way of looking at paintings often possess a certain unchangeable quality, which Hendriks undermines by inserting a fleeting sense and temporality in his work.
A painting like a dusty car in which a passer-by has quickly drawn or written something seems easily washed away by a passing rain shower. The cracks in a stained glass window are extremely realistic, but at the same time still are part of an impenetrable layer of paint and a window which stays opaque.
The brand new works in the exhibition Hearsay continue the serial way of working familiar to Hendriks’ oeuvre, in which a painting can express an existing concept in an entirely new and fresh way.
Lieven Hendriks (1970) studied at the HKU in Utrecht and was a resident at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. His work is part of many renowned international collections, including Museum Voorlinden, ESMoA Los Angeles and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
