Victor Ekpuk was born and raised in Nigeria. He attended the Obafeme Awowolo University of Ile Ife, the cradle of the Nigerian civilization, where he was an active member of the Ona group of Zaria Art Society, a group of artists that has had a greater impact upon Nigerian art than any other movement before or since. His last name, Ekpuk, is the Ibibio word for family. The Ibibio were a tribe of Igbo that were wiped out in the genocidal aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, a prime example of the sheer amount of suffering that has plagued the Nigerian people since they gained their independence from the British, and which has had a profound effect on Victor Ekpuk´s art.
